The Doctor Europaeus label, developed by the European University Association, is an additional certification attached to a national doctoral degree obtained in compliance with four conditions relating to co-supervision, evaluation by an international jury, multilingualism and
the mobility of the doctoral student. It is not an academic title with supranational value , nor is it a title issued by international institutions . The additional Doctor Europaeus certification, attached to the PhD degree, is awarded following a reasoned decision by the teaching staff, who are required to verify that the following conditions are met: a positive assessment of the thesis work by at least two referees, appointed by the teaching staff, belonging to European (not Italian), the presence on the committee of at least one member from a foreign European university institution (not Italian), the discussion must be held in another EU language approved by the Faculty Board, the doctoral thesis must be the result of a period of work and research lasting at least 3 consecutive months in another European country
